Joseph Lawton
Extraordinary sixth-plate daguerreotype of a gregarious old soul identified as Joseph Lawton, along with a date of about 1852. The detail with this image is quite wonderful as we can see all the years this man has lived through the wrinkles on his face. He is dressed in a style from a different time period -maybe late 1700’s - his eyes seem a little sad at this stage in his life and we would love to know his story. With some research this might be possible. The image is in very good plus condition with very nice tonal qualities and contrast and some tinting to the man’s face. There are a few scattered small spots as seen and at an angle in strong light some minor buffing marks are visible. The image had older seals attached and we resealed it with the old glass since it has the identification. The old glass is also convex in style which adds an additional aspect to the viewing. This is certainly a delightful piece and it is housed in half of a case.
